CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. () – The Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) has arrested a man charged with barricading himself inside his residence and firing gun shots at police officers Saturday night.

According to the CCPD, 68-year-old year old Gary Herrington has been charged with multiple counts, including felony charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and misdemeanor obstruction and reckless conduct charges.

Just after 11 p.m. on Saturday, CCPD officers were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of West Manta Cove for a report of a suicidal male armed with firearms.

Authorities say as officers approached the residence, someone inside the home began firing gunshots at the officers. The subject inside the home refused to obey officers’ commands to leave the residence.

Multiple officers and resources from numerous law enforcement agencies were deployed to the scene. Attempts to negotiate with the armed and barricaded subject were unsuccessful, and he refused to surrender to the officers, according to the CCPD.

The suspect left the residence after the Chatham County SWAT team deployed tear gas into the home. He was then booked into the Chatham County Detention Center.

Officials say no police officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

The CCPD received assistance from the following law enforcement agencies, and would like to thank them for the personnel and resources they deployed to the scene:

Chatham County Sheriff’s Office

Georgia State Patrol

Savannah Police Department

Garden City Police Department
