PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A student from Atlantic High School was injured, and a 16-year-old is now in custody following a shooting incident in Port Orange on Monday, authorities reported.
Police were called to the scene at approximately 2:45 p.m. after reports of gunfire near the intersection of Clyde Morris Boulevard and Reed Canal Road. Upon reaching the location, officers discovered two individuals in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven. One person had suffered a non-life-threatening injury, while the other was unharmed, according to a statement from the police.
Investigators have traced the origins of the shooting to a parking lot situated on the 3500 block of Forest Branch Drive, identifying it as a targeted attack by a lone gunman. The suspect, Dywann Andrews, 16, has been linked to the incident, which police say was connected to a drug deal.
Andrews was apprehended around 8:30 p.m., and officials confirmed the recovery of a firearm shortly after his arrest.
The charges against Andrews include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, robbery with a firearm, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, and tampering with evidence.
On Tuesday, the Volusia County School District announced that an Atlantic High School student sustained a non-life-threatening injury and is expected to make a full recovery.
After learning of the shooting, Atlantic High School placed the campus on a secure protocol, which was later lifted the same day, and normal operations resumed. At no time was there a threat to the campus or school community, officials said.
“Student safety is always our first priority. I am relieved our student is expected to recover, and my thoughts are with their family. I I commend Principal Watson and his team for their prompt response. I am also grateful to the Port Orange Police Department for their professionalism and thoroughness in handling this case.”
Dr. Carmen Balgobin, Superintendent Volusia County Schools
Additional law enforcement was on campus on Tuesday as a precaution. Counseling support is available to any student or staff member who needs it, the district said.
