PORT ROYAL, S.C. () — Authorities have apprehended three individuals in relation to a deadly shooting incident that took place at a Port Royal apartment complex on May 15, as announced by Port Royal Police Chief Jeffrey Meyers on Wednesday.
The suspects, identified as Damon Gwathney Jr., Derrick Riley, and Naim Riley, are accused of fatally shooting 23-year-old Tre Sean Reid from Allendale, South Carolina.
All three face charges including murder, attempted armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and aggravated breach of peace.
Law enforcement officials captured Derrick and Naim Riley in Florida, while Gwathney Jr. was detained in North Carolina.
On the evening of May 15, Port Royal Police responded to reports of gunfire at Shell Point Apartments around 11 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Reid with a gunshot wound and immediately administered CPR. Unfortunately, Reid succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital.
An investigation revealed the three suspects allegedly approached a group and began to assault an individual.
Reid reportedly tried to intervene and assist the individual who was being attacked. Reid was then allegedly shot by the suspects and tried to flee before the suspects allegedly continued to shoot at him.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (Florida), Guilford County Sheriff’s Office (North Carolina), South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Hardeeville Police Department, Beaufort Police Department and Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office all assisted in the investigation and arrest, Meyers said.
