AUGUSTA, Ga. – While the festive season may have ended, emergency rooms and urgent care facilities throughout the CSRA continue to experience a consistent influx of patients as the new year unfolds.
“The holiday period holds immense value for many,” expressed Dr. Mark Newton, the CEO of MedNow Urgent Care.
“Mental well-being is vital. Research indicates that a combination of faith, family, and friends significantly enhances not only mental health but also physical well-being,” he added.
Newton notes that during the holidays, many individuals postpone medical visits due to travel plans, family events, or hectic schedules. As the new year begins, unresolved symptoms often drive them to seek medical attention.
In light of this post-holiday surge, Newton emphasizes the importance of knowing when urgent care is suitable and when a visit to the emergency room is warranted.
Urgent care centers can treat a wide range of conditions, including many injuries and illnesses. However, Newton stresses that some symptoms should always be treated in an emergency department.
“When it comes to severe abdominal pain, stroke symptoms, chest pain, severe trauma, severe car accidents—those are the things where an emergency department is indispensable with all the tools that are there,” he said.
Even when patients visit urgent care, they may still be referred to the emergency room if their condition requires a higher level of care.
Newton urges people not to wait too long to seek medical attention, especially if symptoms begin to worsen.
“Getting an accurate diagnosis early can make the difference in being able to have medication that minimizes the symptoms and keeps you out of the hospital, especially if you have asthma, COPD, or other respiratory problems that put you at risk.” Newton said.
Doctors also encourage patients to review their insurance coverage at the start of the year, as plans and benefits may change—which could impact out-of-pocket costs.
Health professionals say knowing where to go, acting early, and understanding coverage can help families stay healthy as the new year gets underway.
