WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – A high-stakes diplomatic meeting is set to take place in Washington Friday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with President Donald Trump.
The visit comes at a crucial moment for Ukraine’s future.
President Trump and President Zelenskyy will meet to discuss a critical minerals agreement and ongoing peace negotiations with Russia.
“I think we’re going to have a very good meeting,” said Trump.
The face-to-face meeting comes after weeks of tension between the two leaders, with President Trump at one point calling Zelenskyy a dictator.
“Did a say that? I can’t believe I said that…”, said Trump.
The two will discuss a deal that would grant the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, a key resource for high-tech industries.
The meeting also comes as Ukraine faces growing pressure to negotiate an end to its war with Russia.
“I think we’re going to have a very successful peace, and I think it’s going to be a long-lasting peace. And, I think it’s going to happen hopefully quickly,” said Trump.
On Thursday President Trump hosted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer they talked about a resolution to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The meeting with President Trump and President Zelenskyy is expected to take place at 11am eastern time.
