ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A tragic incident unfolded in St. Petersburg on Saturday night when a Clearwater woman lost her life and a man sustained injuries after a bus from the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority ignored a red light, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
While heading west on Roosevelt Boulevard, the PSTA bus came to a halt at a red light intersecting with Lake Carillon Drive. Despite the signal, the bus driver, a 38-year-old resident of Pinellas Park, proceeded to make a left turn.
The collision occurred approximately half a mile from the PSTA headquarters. At this time, it remains uncertain whether there were any passengers aboard the bus during the incident.
During the unauthorized turn, the bus moved directly into the path of an oncoming Nissan Armada, which was traveling east on Roosevelt Boulevard.
Behind the wheel of the Nissan was a 57-year-old man from Clearwater, accompanied by a woman of the same age, also from Clearwater.
When the vehicles collided, the bus driver, who FHP said was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the bus onto the roadway. He and the Nissan driver were both injured and transported to a nearby hospital.
The female passenger in the Nissan suffered serious injuries and later died in the hospital, FHP said.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and nearly all the airbags were deployed in the Nissan, photos show.
FHP has not shared any additional information about the condition of those injured in the crash
