TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A recall has been issued for frozen blueberries sold at Publix after they were linked to a dozen cases of E. coli infection.
On July 3, Publix announced the recall, initiated by the Chilean producer Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., of 10-ounce packages of the frozen GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries. This product was distributed in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The blueberries involved in the recall bear the lot code 60401 and have a best by date of February 9, 2028. Publix advises customers to inspect their freezers and to either return or dispose of any affected GreenWise blueberries bought on or before July 3.
This recall was prompted after 12 individuals reported gastrointestinal illnesses between May 11 and June 5, with E. coli as the causative factor. This bacteria can lead to severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, and while generally resolving in a week for healthy individuals, it can pose serious risks, particularly for young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
“Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. is working closely with the appropriate regulatory authorities and its customers regarding this recall. The company has instructed all customers receiving the affected lot to immediately isolate the product, discontinue its distribution, and notify any downstream customers who may have received the affected lot,” a news release from Publix said. “Food safety remains a top priority for Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. The company is committed to protecting consumers and is conducting a thorough investigation into the source of the presumptive finding.”
