Raise a Glass at Johnson City's Seinfeld-Inspired 'Festivus' Celebration at the New Wine Bar

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — On Tuesday, Vino Noir Wine and Tapas Bar in Johnson City embraced the spirit of “Festivus,” a holiday famously introduced by the hit sitcom “Seinfeld.” This festive event also marked the venue’s soft opening, creating a lively atmosphere for both Seinfeld enthusiasts and wine lovers alike.

Originally imagined as a humorous concept on television, Festivus has since transcended the small screen to gain a devoted following in reality.

For those unfamiliar, Festivus was first brought to life in a 1997 episode of “Seinfeld” called “The Strike.” The holiday was conceived as a tongue-in-cheek response to the commercialization and stress often associated with traditional celebrations. Fans of the show have embraced this quirky holiday, observing it annually on December 23.

A hallmark of Festivus is its minimalist approach to decorations. In place of a traditional tree, participants display a bare aluminum pole, chosen for its “very high strength-to-weight ratio,” as explained in the show. The pole remains undecorated, staying true to the holiday’s simple and unadorned aesthetic.

Vino Noir’s owner Natalie Taylor told News Channel 11 that after her business’s opening was delayed nearly a year by permitting wait time and red tape with the city, she was happy to host a soft opening and holiday pop-up at the bar.

“We’ve been waiting to open,” she said. “We finally got our alcohol permit, and with it being so close to the holidays, we thought it would be a lot more fun just to do some fun pop-ups for the holidays instead of just a full opening.”

“So we’re doing these just to kind of do a little sneak peek, everybody gets a little taste, and then we’ll be fully open January 21.”

Taylor said she’s taken pride in curating her wine offerings.

“So we work with local distributors in the area, but we focus on more boutique, smaller production wines, things that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to get in your big retail stores.”

Taylor said she plans to host another pop-up night on Dec. 27 ahead of Vino Noir’s grand opening.

“In between Christmas and New Year’s, we know that a lot of people already have their New Year’s plans set.”
