SAVANNAH, Ga. ()– A community left in shock after Star Castle announced on social media that it will close their doors after summer.
A pillar in the Savannah community since 1984 serving as a place for kid’s birthday parties, derby tournaments and just the place to be on Saturday nights.
Star Castle serves as the only skating rink in the Savannah Area which will leave many unsure where they will indoor skate next.
“It’s the dome of our muse when it comes to roller skating in general. This is a place where relationships are formed, and bonds are created,” avid skater Alexander Speight said. “That’s something that you can’t really get anywhere else.”
A social media account called “Save Star Castle” has even been created to try get a community together to save the entertainment center.
Junior Derby team members Brian Schomburg and Cyndi Arrroyave shared the sentiment about this is a place for kids to enjoy a sport and be themselves.
“When you drive by Star Castle on those evenings, I mean, those parking lot is full there,” Schomburg. “You want to try to have these facilities where people can go and enjoy themselves.”
Marketing Director of the “Derby Devils” Emily “Spectre” Jones said she is hopeful for the future but is still being realistic as she plans for her next steps.
“Maybe if we get really lucky, someone will buy a Star Castle that wants to keep it as a skating rink, but you know, we’re not, we’re not counting on that,” Jones Said.
The General Manger of Star Castle also told that he is hopeful just like everyone else that this building will continue to be a place for fun in the future.
