(NEXSTAR) — Bell Sports is recalling thousands of children’s bicycle helmets (and some adult ones) in the U.S. over concerns that they don’t meet the impact requirements set by the federal government. The helmets could potentially fail to protect wearers’ heads in the event of a crash, according to the recall.

Customers should stop using the recalled helmets immediately.

The recalled helmets were sold at numerous retailers, including Walmart, Target and Academy Sport + Outdoors. They were also sold online at Amazon and Fred Meyer, in addition to both Academy and Target’s online stores. The helmets were available for sale from September 2024 through May 2025 and cost about $20.

The recalled Bell Sports bike helmets are:

Model no. Model Color(s) Manufacture date
B0494Y Axle Pink/purple and “Pixels Green” 9/24
B0605C Cadence Rainbow Road 10/24
Red 9/24
Pink/white checkers 9/24, 10/24
Black/blue 10/24
Blue/black and purple/white 8/24, 9/24 and 10/24
B0605C Rev Red/black swirl 8/24, 9/24
B0605Y Cadence Black/red, Pink/mint, Black/blue, Purple, Pink polka, Green/black 9/24
B0605Y Frenzy Blue/black and “Pink Scuba” 9/24
B0605Y Passage “Blue Comet” 9/24

Model names, numbers and manufacture dates can be found on stickers inside the helmets, says Bell Sports. Manufacture dates will be in either MM/YY or M/YY formats.

Consumers with the recalled helmets should contact Bell Sports for a full refund, which the company says will entail destroying the recalled helmet by cutting its straps off and then sending a photo in for proof. The company says it’s contacting known buyers directly.
