TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On Thursday, a fatal shooting at Florida State University left two people dead and several others hospitalized.

The suspected gunman has since been identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, whom law enforcement officials said is the son of a Leon County deputy.

While there are still plenty of questions regarding how Ikner may have perpetrated the shooting and what possible motive he had, News 6 takes a look a previous campus shootings to see how they compared.

HISTORY OF CAMPUS SHOOTINGS

In 1985, an FSU football player was killed during an argument outside of the school’s gymnasium. Byron Johnson, 20, was eventually found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to over five years in prison.

And in 2014, three people were shot outside of the main campus library by a former student. Myron May, 31, was killed at the entrance to the building during a gun battle with police.

The most recent campus shootings with over two deaths occurred when four people died in February 2023 at Michigan State University, and four more people were killed at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, just 10 months later.

The 33 people killed at Virginia Tech in 2007 still ranks as the worst shooting on a university campus.

Back in 1966, a sniper in a clock tower killed 17 people at the University of Texas before he was killed by police.

Meanwhile, 10 people were killed in a shooting in Oregon at Umpqua Community College in 2015.

Seven people died in a mass shooting at California State University, Fullerton, back in 1976.

Another seven died at Oikos University in California during a shooting in 2012.

Since 1960, there have been 149 fatal shootings on college campuses in the U.S.
