SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (NEXSTAR) — The Springfield City Clerk officially has a new city clerk.

Ward 1 Alderman Chuck Redpath was appointed during a special city council meeting on Tuesday night. Redpath was in his final term on the city council, and now plans to serve out the rest of former clerk Frank Lesko’s term.

Lesko left the position after winning the race for the Sangamon County Recorder. Lesko beat the incumbent Josh Langfelder, but hung on to both the Recorder and Clerk positions while the county conducted a discovery recount in the race.

Redpath’s appointment comes just days after Lesko officially vacated the position. Five aldermen voted for Redpath, three voted against it and two voted present.

Now that Redpath is taking over the Clerk position, it will be up to Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher to appoint a replacement for the Ward 1 seat.
