SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Tomorrow will begin a 6-day funeral schedule to honor the legacy of the 39th president.

Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer, a Sunday school teacher, a Georgian, and the longest living president. He died at the age 100 and leaves behind a life dedicated to decades of service. Throughout this week his funeral will make many stops.

Here’s a quick look at the events ahead and how you can join in on honoring the 39th president.
The funeral will begin tomorrow morning in Americus with a motorcade to ride through his hometown of Plains, Georgia. This will also include a pause at the family farm where Jimmy Carter grew up. Following that the motorcade will travel to Georgia’s State Capitol in Atlanta, where Governor Kemp and other officials will be.

There will be moments of silence and public viewings in Atlanta from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning at the Carter Presidential Center. Following, Carter’s body will travel to Washington D.C., where he will lie at the U.S. Capitol, followed by a national funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on January 9th. President Biden will deliver a eulogy at Carter’s funeral service.

Afterward, Carter will return to Plains for a private service and burial, but the public is invited to line the motorcade route for his final journey.

Jimmy Carter left behind a strong legacy.

“He was a real underdog campaigning when you study the presidency, he came from really a long, long way, from nowhere. he had no national contacts, what he was able to accomplish in 1976, if I were running for office, I would study it and figure out exactly what he was able to do,” said Stan Deaton, who works for the Georgia Historical Society.

If you are in the Atlanta or the Georgia area — you can view his body from Saturday at 7 p.m. through Tuesday through 6 a.m. at the Carter Center.

In Washington D.C., on Tuesday, mourners can pay their respects from 7 p.m. to midnight at the U.S. Capitol and from 7 a.m. on January 8th to 7 a.m. on January 9th.

The Carter Center suggests that instead of sending flowers, people could donate to the Carter Center, which the former president established in the 1980s after he left office.
It was established to monitor elections globally, eradicate illnesses, and restore peace.
