SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Renegade Paws assisted in the rescue of 136 dogs of varying breeds from a breeder in Pierce County on Wednesday.

The group shared the rescue on Facebook and detailed the poor conditions of the dogs.

“While dogs lived in abject filth, their breeders lived large,” the group wrote. “A manicured lawn juxtaposed with the urine-soaked coats of sick dogs bred who lived their whole lives for the financial gain of humans.”

Among the afflictions the animals faced were rotted teeth, open sores and matted coats. The pens where they were kept were described as small and lacking shelter or cover.

The dogs water bowls were filled with feces and mold.

Renegade transported all of the dogs to safety with the help of other local rescues and authorities.

More than 50 of those dogs were brought to Savannah.

“These dogs are not in good shape,” the organization wrote. “They have been subject to neglect for perhaps decades. One dog is missing part of its jaw and another has mammary masses. Many are heartworm positive. All must be spayed and neutered and will need expensive dental care. After they came into safety, multiple mother dogs gave birth. Each of these dogs will likely cost hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars to become healthy again. If they can even be made healthy.”

After several hours of bathing and cleaning, the dogs were put in foster homes.

The dogs were a variety of breeds including shihtzus, dachshunds, chihuahuas, miniature poodles, Maltese, Boston terriers, Australian shepherds, yorkies and Pomeranians. Renegade said that these were “not ‘backyard breeders.'”

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper announced Thursday that their Law Enforcement Division executed the search warrant after receiving a tip regarding alleged animal abuse.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture said that they are currently working with local rescue groups including Renegade Paws Rescue, K9 Battle Buddies, Allmon’s All About Animals, Liberty County Animal Services, Atlanta Humane Society, and Humane Society of Greater Savannah to rehome or foster the seized animals.
