Greene: 'I feel very sorry' for Trump

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed sympathy for former President Donald Trump after he labeled her as “very dumb” and questioned her adherence to “America first” principles. This development marks a notable shift in the relationship between Trump and Greene, who was once one of his most ardent supporters.

In an interview with CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Greene conveyed a sense of compassion for Trump, stating, “I feel very sorry for President Trump. I genuinely do. It has to be challenging to live in a state of constant hostility, resorting to vitriol and name-calling, and spreading falsehoods about others just to get his way or win a dispute.”

The remarks followed Trump’s comments in a recent interview where he appeared to address Greene’s critique of his focus on foreign policy at the expense of domestic issues. Greene has been vocal about her belief that Trump should prioritize the needs of everyday Americans more.

Trump responded in a conversation with Politico, saying, “I’ve seen foolish individuals like Marjorie Traitor Greene — or as some call her, Taylor Greene. Some even refer to her as Taylor Brown because green sometimes turns to brown, which isn’t nice — but I’ve watched her claim that I spend too much time on foreign matters.”

He continued, emphasizing his commitment to the nation, “When I go on a trip, I only have one place in mind: It’s the United States.”

Greene, in the CNN interview, was also asked to address Trump’s Monday social media post, in which he seemed to respond to Greene’s recent suggestion that she no longer identifies with the MAGA label, which she noted is reserved for Trump’s core supporters, but still embraces the “America first” ideology.

“Marjorie is not AMERICA FIRST or MAGA, because nobody could have changed her views so fast, and her new views are those of a very dumb person,” Trump said in the post.

Greene, responding Tuesday to Trump’s comments, said the rhetoric is “exactly what’s wrong in America today” and suggested Trump bears responsibility for what she describes as the toxic political culture.

“That’s what’s wrong in this toxic political environment that has ripped our country apart,” she said. “And I personally think that that’s poor leadership from a president. It’s a very bad demeanor, and Americans are very tired of it.”

Greene, who has recently apologized for the role she played in contributing to the toxic political culture, was asked in the interview to what extent Trump is responsible for the toxicity.

“Oh, absolutely. He’s a leader in it,” she said, adding that “so were others on the other side,” pointing to former President Joe Biden’s Justice Department, which she said was “weaponized” against Trump and his family.
