LONGWOOD, Fla. – Dee in Longwood has a schnauzer, so she has chewed-up door trim!

She asked us to replace the weatherstripping – that’s the foam seal around her door that insulates it – so we pulled it out and popped in a new one.

Dee purchased:

A new piece of weatherstripping

We brought with us:

Flat-head screwdriver

We recommend:

Sanding block, maybe paint

Step 1

Pull out the old weatherstripping. The strip is held in place by a groove in the wooden door trim. The rubber edge of the strip is shoved into the groove. So start from the top of the strip and try and tug it out of the groove. You may need to use the tip of a flathead screwdriver to pry out the end of the strip (just be careful with the screwdriver not to damage the wood!). Once you get the corner free, you should be able to yank out the rest of the strip all the way to the bottom.

Step 2

Go shopping. But when you go to your home improvement store – #househack – take the old piece of weatherstripping along with you to the store! Then you can make sure the new piece you buy matches the old one perfectly. You want an exact fit. Length of the strip, though, does not matter, as long as it’s as long or longer than your old strip.

Step 3

This is where you may want to sand down your wooden door trim and even paint it. Dee’s was really scratched from the dog so we used 120 grit sandpaper to sand out the scratches and make it smooth. Dee will paint it to match.

Step 4

Press in the new weatherstripping. Again, start from the top. Just push the rubber end of the strip into the groove and work your way down. When you get all the way to the bottom, use a pair a of scissors and cut off the extra.
