FORT STEWART, Ga. () — The alleged Fort Stewart shooter was seemingly involved in an intimate relationship with one of the male victims and self-reported the man as his husband just months before the shooting, according to a report acquired.

The alleged shooter, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, was arrested by a Georgia State Patrol (GSP) trooper for driving under the influence on May 18, just weeks before he allegedly opened fire on Fort Stewart.

In the GSP report, the arresting trooper said Radford’s car was released to a man that Radford self- reported to be his husband.

However, according to court records from Liberty County, that man was already married to a person who sources said identifies as female and was in the process of finalizing a divorce from her.

Court records showed the divorce between the man Radford referred to as his husband back in May and that man’s wife was finalized on Aug. 5, one day before the shooting at Fort Stewart.

Though Radford told GSP that the man who took custody of his car was his husband, a source with knowledge of the investigation said Radford was only known only as an acquaintance to the man, with the potential for a relationship.

That source said Radford’s self-reported husband was one of the shooting victims.

Radford is being charged with domestic violence by the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel, and their office also confirmed one of the victims was Radford’s intimate partner.

The new development comes amidst reports that Radford was bullied for a stutter during his time at Fort Stewart.

spoke with a soldier who recently left Fort Stewart who shed more light on these claims.

“He was essentially just the bottom of the pecking order and not handling it well…He was known for being pretty aggressive with a soldier and pretty extreme behavior and he was known for a heavy stutter,” the person, who requested to remain anonymous, said.

Radford has been transferred to Joint Base Charleston for pre-trial confinement.

“He was pretty much just made fun of, and instead of doing literally anything else he could have done, he took the extreme option,” the soldier said.
