Rescue teams, evacuations in SWVA after flooding

SOUTHWEST Va. (WJHL) — Rescue teams, non-profit organizations and other crews are in the region to assist with damage and power outages caused by widespread flooding.

The Virginia National Guard has soldiers staged in Abingdon to assist local emergency managers and support residents impacted by the severe weather.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department’s Swift Water Team was deployed to Lebanon, Va.

Virginia State Police (VSP), Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and Virginia Emergency Support Team (VEST), according to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.

The Virginia Department of Forestry Forest Wardens is supporting fire department flood responses and swift water rescues in the counties of Bland, Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, Smyth, Tazewell and Wise, according to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.

The Chesterfield County Fire and EMS said Swift Water Rescue Teams from the Hanover, Lynchburg and Bristol Fire Departments trained on Friday for the weekend storm. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management also sent teams to the region.

Divine Disaster Relief said that on Sunday, it is working with other organizations to assist emergency responders in Hurley. ‘

Savage Freedoms Relief Operations is assisting local rescue teams.

United Cajun Navy is assisting local teams with rescues and rapid response efforts.

Virginia Task Force 4 rescued 51 people, 17 dogs and 8 cats in the Richlands area of Tazewell County. The crew is working to assist in other rescues.
