BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. () A 17-year-old in Bryan County is dead after a car crash last month, and now, some in the community are concerned the accident is part of a larger issue.

The crash happened on Wilma Edwards Road, killing Colby Minis and forever changing his family’s life.

“Silence is consent. If they don’t stop them and tell them it’s illegal, they’re going to do it. It’s simple,” Bob Hastings, a nearby resident, said.

Hastings lives a few streets over from Wilma Edwards, and he says the crash that killed one teen and put three others in the hospital, isn’t a surprise to him.

“There’s a problem with four-wheelers. Four wheelers to drag racing up and down these roads is rampant. I’ve called dozens of times, hundreds of times, to have someone come out. 35, 40 minutes later, they’ll come out. I had one night it was 4 hours,” he said.

The Bryan County Sheriff’s office says they’re doing all they can to enforce traffic laws.

“Our job on patrol is to patrol these areas, to be present, to be seen. Just being seen is policing, and sometimes just our presence there can reduce some of these things. So, we just try to be everywhere we can be, and we can’t be everywhere all the time,” Lieutenant William Toole with the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, said. “In officer numbers, we may be 15 minutes away. By the time, we get to responding to a call, the person who created the infraction is no longer on scene. So, it’s very difficult unless we’re just right there. With our call volume, it’s hard to just sit right there.”
