A family in Effingham County, Georgia, is grappling with the tragic loss of a beloved father and husband following a fatal hit-and-run incident on May 1.
Crystal Sharpe is mourning the untimely death of her husband, Michael “Danny” Sharpe, who was not only a devoted partner but also a cherished father to their two children. Known for his love of the outdoors and his dedication to his family, Danny’s absence is deeply felt.
The tragic event unfolded on May 1 while Danny was driving in Effingham County. During a routine phone conversation with Crystal, the call suddenly went silent, leaving Crystal anxious and uncertain.
“I didn’t immediately fear the worst,” Crystal recounted. “I thought perhaps he was injured, but I was clinging to hope and praying for his safety.”
Authorities from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office reported that Danny was the victim of a hit-and-run incident on Old Augusta Road. The suspect, 27-year-old Deiby Janamejoy Jansasoy, allegedly veered across the road and collided with Danny’s vehicle.
Meanwhile, Sharpe was still on the phone, left in the dark and not aware of what was going on.
“No one would tell me how bad it was,” Sharpe said. “Finally, I found out they were taking him to Memorial Hospital. So, we went up there and that’s when they told us.”
Danny passed away due to his injuries.
Jansasoy was also taken to the hospital but was later arrested. He was charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, reckless driving, DUI, failure to maintain lane and driving while unlicensed.
According to a statement made by the Department of Homeland Security Jansasoy came to this country illegally from Colombia in 2023.
Sharpe said Jansasoy’s actions changed her families live forever.
“I do know that regardless of a person’s stance and ethnicity, that many people make poor choices to drink and drive,” Sharpe said. “It could have been anyone driving that vehicle.”
The community has rallied around Sharpe and their two young children. Sharpe said she has been on Short Term Disability due to narcolepsy. However, it has since run out and left her without pay as she works to receive Long Term Disability.
A GoFundMe has been created to help support the family and has almost reached $50,000.
A close family friend created a fundraising event to help support the family. It will take place on June 13-14. They will hold a fishing tournament, clay shoot and auction.
“I think it’s incredible the outpouring of love, prayers, support and kindness that they’ve shown me and the kids during this difficult time that we are going through.” Sharpe said.
Jansasoy is expected in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
Sharpe said her family are on the road to healing and believes there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
“We will make it through,” Sharpe said.
