SANDERSVILLE, Ga. () — This weekend, a community preservation initiative is set to transform cherished family memories into digital formats in Washington County.
The event is part of the “Free the Tapes” project spearheaded by the University of Georgia Libraries’ Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the gathering will be held at the Washington County Chamber of Commerce in Sandersville.
Individuals who provided their old home movies earlier this year will have the opportunity to view and collect their newly digitized versions during the event.
This program offers residents the chance to convert obsolete formats, such as VHS tapes, into digital files, ensuring that these family treasures are preserved for future generations.
Organizers say the project has already digitized more than 500 family films through previous events in Athens, Georgia.
The initiative is part of a partnership with the University of Georgia’s Archway Partnership program.
Organizers say the goal is to preserve personal history while making it accessible on modern devices.
