CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Researchers from the University of Illinois have teamed up with counterparts in India to identify chemical markers in blood that might enable earlier detection of gallbladder cancer.
According to ACES News, the study revealed distinct metabolic patterns that could differentiate gallbladder cancer from noncancerous conditions. This discovery holds promise for developing a noninvasive screening method for a cancer typically diagnosed in its advanced stages.
Although gallbladder cancer is not very common in the United States, it is prevalent in regions like Assam in northern India, where the University of Illinois collaborates with Tezpur University. Despite its rarity in the U.S., gallbladder cancer still impacts about 12,000 Americans annually and results in nearly 2,000 deaths.
