RICHMOND HILL, Ga. () — On Monday, officials discussed a potential adjustment to Bryan County’s property tax system, aiming to offer homeowners more stability in their tax expenses.
During a community forum held in Richmond Hill, Representative Ron Stephens from District 164 elaborated on the initiative.
He explained that the proposed ballot initiative intends to lock in school property taxes according to the assessed home values from the year 2025.
The primary objective is to shield homeowners from escalating tax bills that result from surging property values.
Stephens remarked, “While the market value of your house may continue to rise as desired, your assessment for tax purposes will remain constant, recorded in a separate column, and safeguarded from change for as long as you reside in your home, unless significant renovations are made.”
Stephens said voters in both Bryan and Chatham counties will have the chance to weigh in on the proposal this November. He also said the change would make school property taxes consistent with other local tax freezes already in place.
