Rising Incidents of Fatal Domestic Violence Reported in Illinois

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence has released its annual homicide report, revealing a concerning trend for 2024. The report highlights a 14% rise in deaths related to domestic violence compared to the previous year.

In 2024, Illinois witnessed 137 fatalities across 97 domestic violence situations, a significant increase from the 120 deaths in 90 incidents reported in 2023.

This uptick is being observed by various organizations throughout Central Illinois, including Dove Incorporated in Decatur.

Recently, a 42-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a house fire in Douglas County, raising further alarms about domestic safety.

Dove Incorporated has provided assistance to 600 individuals dealing with domestic violence this year. The increasing frequency of such incidents poses a challenge for the organization as they strive to support everyone seeking help.

Huff said the problem is tied to a lack of affordable housing too. He added that many victims can’t find a place to live so they don’t leave an abusive relationship.
