In a significant development out of Savannah, Georgia, Jake Merklinger, a standout from Calvary Day School, has revealed plans to enter the transfer portal after spending two seasons with the University of Tennessee. This announcement was first reported by On3 on Wednesday.
Merklinger, who emerged as a highly regarded talent, was a four-star recruit in the class of 2024. He was notably ranked as the 13th best quarterback nationwide, underscoring his potential and promise in the sport.
During his prolific high school career as a Cavalier, Merklinger amassed impressive statistics, throwing for a total of 9,635 yards, alongside 113 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. His performance earned him prestigious accolades, including the Offensive Player of the Year award by the Savannah Quarterback Club in 2022, as well as the Region 3-3A Player of the Year title.
While at Tennessee, Merklinger saw action in six games over two seasons. During this time, he completed 19 of 33 pass attempts, contributing 221 yards and two touchdowns to his team’s efforts. His standout collegiate performance came in a game against ETSU in September, where he achieved 9 completions from 14 attempts, totaling 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Merklinger will be searching for a new team in 2026 with two years of eligibility remaining.
