Russia Strikes Ukraine’s Kyiv With Missiles, Drones After Peace Talks Deal

KYIV – A Russian overnight barrage of ballistic missiles and drones killed one person and injured 22 others in Ukraine’s capital, Ukrainian officials said Thursday. The strikes came just hours after the Kremlin agreed to revive U.S.-brokered negotiations focused on ending the war.

Several Kyiv districts reported damage to residential buildings, transport infrastructure and other civilian locations, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. In the Dniprovskyi district, on the eastern side of the Dnipro River, fires erupted, killing one person and injuring six others, including a child.

The Kremlin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed “in principle” to resume three-way talks involving Russia, the United States and Ukraine after Nov. 10, one week after the U.S. midterm election. Putin had held discussions with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the prospect of renewed negotiations but struck a guarded tone.

“We’ll see what happens this time,” he said shortly before air raid alerts were issued across Kyiv.
