SAVANNAH, Ga. () – As one of Savannah’s most bustling events approaches, local authorities are unveiling their safety strategies for the anticipated St. Patrick’s Day festivities. City, county, and state officials are collaborating to ensure a secure environment for all attendees.

According to Jason Pagliaro, who oversees special events, film, and tourism for Savannah, extensive preparations have been underway for months. These efforts include mapping out the parade’s layout and conducting thorough threat evaluations to guarantee a secure celebration.

These meticulous plans are designed to facilitate seamless communication among various response teams throughout the event.

Starting on March 11, residents and visitors will observe the installation of “no parking” signs and the establishment of public safety command posts along the designated parade path and gathering areas.

On parade day, the staging area will be inaccessible from 6 a.m., the parade route will be closed off at 8 a.m., and Bay Street will be shut down by 9 a.m. to manage traffic effectively.

Any vehicles in the orange-shaded area will be towed at the owner’s expense. See the map below.

Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther called the celebration a “cornerstone of Savannah’s identity” and ensured it is an all-hands-on-deck operation.

“Our primary mission is to ensure that it remains a safe and secure family environment for everyone,” said Gunther.

He said they continue to monitor current world events to ensure safety in the city during large-scale events.

“We are keenly aware of the current national and international climate, and we incorporate these global events, safety and security planning,” said Gunther. “We continuously evaluate risks,  analyze trends, and review threat assessments to make sure we are prepared for a wide range of scenarios.”

Georgia State Patrol Captain John Crews said they would be strictly enforcing traffic laws, including Georgia’s hands-free law and DUI regulations.

“No impaired driving,” said Crew. “One green beer, call a cab. That’s one too many.  Call a cab or call a friend. The simple thing is, if you drink or do anything that impairs your ability to drive, do not get behind the wheel.”

Traffic and ordinance violation fines will be increased, and cars could be towed throughout the weekend. Officials said disorderly conduct and vandalism will also not be tolerated.

The Savannah Police Department will maintain a highly-visible presence along the parade route and throughout downtown to reassure safety and deter crime.

An emergency operation center will be set up within the traffic control center at the Adams Complex, so officials can oversee downtown and place officers, firefighters or EMS where needed.

All fire stations will serve as a designated safe place.

Georgia State Patrol’s honor guard and motor unit will have approximately 80 troopers and officers assigned to security checkpoints along the parade route.

Savannah Fire Chief Derik Minard said fire apparatus, rescue teams, EMS teams and specialized units will be positioned strategically throughout the city to ensure the rapid response. The Savannah Fire Marshal’s office will also be working to maintain safe and clear exits.

Safety tips from officials:

  • Lock vehicles and remove valuables
  • Follow city signage to direct you throughout the city
  • Establish a designated meeting spot in case you are separated from your group
  • Take a photo of the children in their outfits that day to provide an accurate description to the police, in case they’re separated.
  • Arrive early
  • Stay hydrated
  • Trust your instincts, and locate an officer if in need of assistance
  • Download the SAV 311 app and SPD mobile app for updates.
