Boating safety guide for Independence Day weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Boating is a popular way to observe Independence Day fireworks and to cool off.

However, after the fatal boating accident in the Skull Creek area, it is important to remember the importance of taking appropriate precautions when boating.

Here are a few things you should remember to stay safe:

Boat accidents increase during the summer months, no matter if you are an experienced sailor or an amateur. This is why the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) warned boaters not to get too confident in the waters.

Boat accidents are not different from car crashes: collisions with other boats and striking objects on the ‘road’ are some of the most common water incidents and, like cars, they can be avoided by following some preventative measures:

  • Make sure your boat is in good shape. The SCDNR is conducting courtesy boat inspections to ensure boat safety this weekend.
  • Don’t speed. In certain areas, boats have speed limits. Make sure to respect them like you would when driving a car.
  • Check, check, check. Check your fuel, battery charge, fire extinguisher and lifejacket.
  • Carry a first aid kit. This can be vital in an emergency situation.

Consuming alcohol and boating might sound like the perfect combination, but most boat incidents are caused by inexperience and reckless behavior. Just don’t do it. Here is a list of the most common causes of boating incidents:

  • Weather conditions
  • Lack of maintenance
  • Substance abuse
  • Improper navigation

As you enjoy this holiday weekend, remember to do so safely.
