Salmonella Alerts: Key Food Recalls to Watch This Month

(NEXSTAR) – A variety of consumables, ranging from frozen pizzas and pork rinds to seasonings and pet food, have recently faced health alerts or recalls due to potential salmonella contamination.

Salmonella bacteria are responsible for causing salmonellosis, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This infection can occur through consuming or coming into contact with contaminated water, interacting with animals and their environments (notably, a recent outbreak was traced back to backyard chickens), or ingesting tainted food.

The CDC notes that salmonella infections typically manifest as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms often appear six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without medical intervention within four to seven days, the infection can pose a greater risk to young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
