CUMMING, Ga. () — Sanitation workers went on strike in Cumming Tuesday, a Teamster Union spokesperson said.

Members of Teamsters Local 728 went on strike due to unfair labor practices and a failure to bargain over workplace condition changes, a Teamster spokesperson said.

The strike is reportedly expected to affect waste collections for thousands of residents around the Alpharetta area.

This strike comes after Teamsters Union Local 728 and the Republic Solid Waste Cumming Teamsters held a practice picket line on June 24.

Republic Teamsters around Boston and Ottawa already launched strikes. Workers also voted to authorize a strike in Southern California this month, according to the Teamsters website.

A spokesperson said that the union could extend picket lines nationwide, which would result in over 3,500 Teamsters striking.

Sanitation workers at Republic Services in Forsyth County joined a national Teamsters strike in November of 2019, according to 11Alive, an NBC affiliate in Atlanta.
