Sarasota County Schools Consider Strengthening Partnership with ICE in New Resolution

In Sarasota County, Florida, a new resolution proposed by the local school board seeks to solidify its commitment to cooperating with state and local law enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This move has sparked a conversation about the role of law enforcement in educational settings.

Sarasota School Board Chair Bridget Ziegler emphasized the district’s dedication to legal compliance. “We have a top-notch team committed to following the law. Our cooperation with law enforcement is assured, and any rumors about raids on our schools are unfounded and designed to provoke fear,” Ziegler stated confidently.

Amidst this discussion, a recent Department of Justice report highlighted an incident involving a Florida woman who assaulted ICE officers during an immigration operation, underscoring the tensions surrounding immigration enforcement.

Reassuring the community, a spokesperson for Sarasota County Schools clarified that the new resolution would not alter current student operations. “Our day-to-day activities remain unchanged. We are devoted to maintaining a safe learning environment and strictly protect student records. There will be no release of student information to any external entity,” said Craig Maniglia, the director of communications for Sarasota County Schools.

The resolution states that, “The Sarasota County School Board and the Sarasota County Schools Police Department commit to full cooperation and collaboration with all local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies… and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in the lawful execution of their duties.”

Superintendent Terry Connor shared a statement to staff, where he mentioned Sarasota County Schools does not collect or retain the immigration status of their students and that if there is a valid court order or subpoena, they will comply with the law.

News Channel 8 also spoke with the Sarasota County Democratic Party’s chair David Dean about their thoughts on the resolution.

“There’s people who are very much in favor of the current enforcement tactics that are being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security. There’s others that have the view that the Constitution provides protections for everybody living in their country, such as due process,” he said.

The board is set to meet on Tuesday to discuss the resolution.
