MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. () — The boys basketball teams of Savannah High and McIntosh County Academy secured GHSA semifinal wins on Feb. 28 at Georgia College and State University to set up a Region 3-A Division II rematch for the state championship.
Savannah High faced Warren County in its semifinal matchup. Savannah High dominated for most of the game. The Bluejackets led by as many as 20 points in the second half. Warren County made a late run in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to four points. However, Savannah scored a layup and then stole an inbounds pass for another layup to stretch their lead back to eight points, 58-50. The final score was 64-55.
“Putting in work since eighth grade,” senior guard Jermontae Brown said. “We have been playing together since eighth grade. We’ve always been talking about this. We want to win state together and we stayed together and that’s the goal. That’s what we about to do.”
In the other Class A Division II semifinal, McIntosh County Academy defeated Greene County. The game was tied at 23 at the half. In the third quarter, McIntosh was outscored by five points and trailed 38-33 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, McIntosh’s defense rose to the occasion. They only allowed three points over the next eight minutes. McIntosh won, 49-41.
“It’s going to motivate me to dunk on somebody,” forward MJ Quarterman said about losing to Savannah High in the region title game earlier this season. “Number one [Savannah High senior guard Maki Joyner] I’m coming after you. Since you said it was a breeze last game, it’s over. I’m shutting your junk down. We’re going to get that ring. We on that and I stamp that, too.”
These two schools have met three times. Savannah High leads the series, 2-1, after dropping the first game on Jan. 7 by one point, 48-47. Savannah won the next matchup on Feb. 14 at home by 10 points, 56-46. Ten days later, they met again for the region title. Savannah High came out on top after Joyner buried a 3-point field goal with under 10 seconds remaining. McIntosh’s response from three to tie the game went in-and-out. Savannah High claimed its second consecutive region championship
In Class AAA, Windsor Forest’s season came to an end at the hands of Sandy Creek. Windsor Forest trailed, 19-3, after the first eight minutes. In the second half, the Knights cut the deficit to five, but were not able to overcome a slow start. They fell, 71-42.
On the girls’ side, Jenkins suffered a heartbreaking loss. The Lady Warriors took the lead with under five seconds remaining. However, they gave up a field goal at the buzzer. Jenkins fell, 56-55.
The run this season by the Lady Warriors is the deepest girls’ basketball program has achieved in school history.
In Atlanta, Bradwell Institute’s season also ended. The Lady Tigers fell to Langston Hughes at Georgia State University, 66-46.
