Boys HS Bball: Savannah still in 'championship or bust' mindset

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah High boys’ basketball team has embarked on their state title defense with a record of 3-2, but head coach George Brown remains focused on the ultimate goal: winning another state championship.

The Bluejackets kicked off their season with victories over Northside and Beach. However, they faced setbacks with consecutive losses to Butler and South Effingham before bouncing back with a thrilling double-overtime win against Groves.

This season, Savannah High is navigating the challenge of replacing their entire starting lineup due to graduation, including the departure of Maki Joyner, last year’s Class A Division II Player of the Year, along with four other seniors.

Despite these changes, Coach Brown is confident in his team’s potential to retain their title.

“Our aim is to be ranked in March,” Brown stated. “Rankings at the start of the season aren’t our priority. Honestly, last year, rankings were more of a distraction. For us, they’re just opinions, and they don’t really matter. What’s important is having something to strive for throughout the season.”

The next game for the state champs is Tuesday, Dec. 2 at home against Savannah Classical at 7 p.m.
