SAVANNAH, Ga ()– On Thursday, the Savannah City Council is meeting to discuss several proposals for improvement in areas including the downtown Victorian District.
One of the hottest topics on today’s council agenda is the initiative to develop public facilities adjacent to Forsyth Park. City leaders would have to demolish existing structures to make way for the new features.
The proposed development would be between Barnard and Whitaker Streets and from Waldberg Street to Park Avenue. The plan is to build multiple office buildings, public restrooms, and a three-story underground parking garage.
The city says the 31.3 million dollar project will serve as a gateway entrance to the Historic District and Forsyth Park and that the new facilities are in the best interest of the residents and visitors.
The council is also looking at a new WWII historical marker on River Street and the $1.3M sale of city-owned property on Louisville Road to the Georgia Port Authority.
There is also a proposal for another $350k toward sidewalk, curb, and cobblestone repairs. Also, The Savannah Music Festival will be giving a preview of the 2024 festival line-up. Savannah is also seeking approval for a major development for a 27-acre subdivision at Little Neck Road and Bottlebrush Drive. It would create 52 separate lots of varying sizes.
The city is also discussing the allocation of $100k to the Savannah Fire Department for Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC). This training is to better prepare the department to respond to mass shooters and disasters.
The council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 28th, at 2:00 p.m.
