SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Authorities in Savannah are currently delving into an incident that reportedly escalated into violence during a demonstration aimed at celebrating a ceasefire in Gaza and the liberation of the last Israeli hostages.

Participants in a caravan, displaying both Israeli and American flags, found themselves in a tense situation near the crossroads of East 37th and Bull Street on Monday. What started as a joyous gathering soon took a troubling turn, according to one attendee who chose to remain anonymous.

“The event was quite large, and we received an outpouring of support from the Savannah community,” the attendee recounted. “Unfortunately, a young woman at a traffic light spotted the Israeli flags and began to hurl insults and profanities at us.”

has reviewed the police report related to this event. Eyewitnesses described the woman as loudly cursing and shouting before she resorted to throwing a stone at a vehicle.

The report detailed that a man stepped in, attempting to restrain her by the wrist, only for her to allegedly attempt to spit on him in response.

The report states that the woman also tried to take an Israeli flag from a young girl. During that attempt, she hit another man in the eye with the flag pole.

Seconds later, the woman left the scene, but her partner reportedly told police that the woman was acting this way because of the “implications of the flag”.

“We were celebrating love and peace, and someone full of hate just came on and ruined that celebration. I hope they will get her,” the participant said.

Witnesses told News 3, the injuries to the participants are minor, but some of the children who were present are traumatized by the incident.

“It ended in a very sad way where those kids were sitting there and crying for hours,” the participant said.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson commented on the altercation and the investigation.

“We want to make sure that people have the right to be able to peaceably gather and assemble. I want to make sure that we’re very, very clear about that. We’re not going to stand for that. If it is a hate crime, then we’re going to vigorously pursue that,” Johnson said.

A spokesperson with Savannah Police told that they are continuing to investigate this incident, and detectives are working with the district attorney’s office. No arrests have been made.
