SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Costs are going way up for one project in Savoy.

The village has wanted a new underpass at E Curtis Road and N Dunlap Ave. for more than a decade. Now, they’re getting a look at the new price tag. Village President John Brown said the project total has gone up because of inflation.

He gave a status report at a village board meeting on Wednesday. Brown said the original amount was more than $30 million. Now the total is nearly $55 million.

He said this increase won’t cost taxpayers because Illinois Canadian Railroad and other funding sources are taking care of most it. Brown said by creating this underpass, it’ll benefit drivers, pedestrians and firefighters.

“Trains oftentime block the traffic, and this will allow for an interrupted emergency response and even general traffic flow,” Brown said. “It will allow for uninterrupted traffic flow, east to west part of town.”

He said right now the village is short $2 million, but he believes they will have enough time to get the money before the project starts.

Brown said they’ll start looking for contractors by the end of this year or next year. The project’s new start date will now be in 2027 instead of 2026 and will take about two years.
