GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley school board has taken action regarding a teacher who was placed on administrative leave for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to a student.

The board met Wednesday night to discuss the future of Robbie Dinkins, who taught middle school and coached soccer in the district. After a closed session lasting around an hour and a half, the board of education voted to suspend and dismiss Dinkins.

This all started in late March when a parent brought in copies of text messages between their child and Dinkins to the middle school principal. The principal and superintendent Jeremy Darnell met with Dinkins and then began to talk with the district’s legal counsel. Earlier this month, they decided to put him on administrative leave.

In a resolution passed Wednesday night, the board said they held a hearing where Dinkins could respond to administration. He didn’t go in person, but submitted a statement. The resolution also said Dinkins is suspended without pay immediately. But, there are procedural issues they need to address before he’s fully dismissed.

“Mr. Dinkins’ dismissal shall become effective at such time as the board’s decision to dismiss is affirmed as provided by law.” said Board President Phil Whitehouse, “Or in the event that Mr. Dinkins does not request a hearing within the time provided by law, immediately upon the expiration of the time to request the hearing, or in the event the hearing request is withdrawn immediately upon the State Board of Education’s confirmation of the termination of the hearing.”

If Dinkins does request a hearing appealing the decision, the board’s president and secretary will be given a notice and a hearing officer will be selected.

WCIA reached out to both the Gibson City Police Department and the school district for details on the investigation. They both said they couldn’t comment because the law enforcement side of the investigation is still ongoing.
