Seminole County Waste Crew Rescues Five Kittens From Tipping Floor

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A routine morning at a Seminole County waste facility turned into a rescue mission when workers discovered five tiny kittens darting across the trash tipping floor. The kittens were removed from the hazardous area and placed with foster caregivers.

Officials have not determined how the kittens ended up at the facility or whether someone intentionally left them there. Seminole County Animal Services said the incident also underscores the need to spay and neuter stray cats, helping prevent unwanted litters from being born in dangerous conditions.

William Rosado, an employee at the site, made the discovery during his usual morning inspection while trucks were arriving.

Rosado said he noticed something moving out of the corner of his eye near a loader. When he turned, he saw a small golden-colored kitten racing away.

The first kitten quickly led him to the rest of the group.

After spotting three more kittens, Rosado said the golden kitten ran back toward the area, revealing that another kitten was hiding nearby.

Workers ultimately rescued five kittens. Several employees immediately volunteered to foster or adopt them, though the kittens first had to be evaluated by Seminole County Animal Services.

Diane Gagliano, the agency’s foster program coordinator, said the kittens needed medical attention, vaccinations and spay or neuter procedures before moving forward.

When they arrived, the kittens were estimated to be about four weeks old and weighed roughly a pound each, Gagliano said.

The kittens appeared to belong to the same litter, but rescuers could not find a mother cat in the area. That left officials concerned that the animals may have been abandoned.

Gagliano said investigators were still considering several possibilities, including whether the kittens had arrived inside a truck or had been carried there by their mother.

One kitten was in especially poor condition and later died. Gagliano said it was likely the smallest or weakest of the litter, while the other four survived.

For Rosado and his co-workers, the rescue has provided an unexpected bright spot during their workdays.

One driver adopted the golden kitten and regularly sends Rosado videos showing how well the cat is doing.

Under Florida law, abandoning or dumping an animal can lead to misdemeanor or felony charges, including allegations involving abandonment, neglect or animal cruelty.

Seminole County Animal Services works with rescue organizations such as Pet Alliance to place kittens and other adoptable animals in foster care. The agency also promotes spaying and neutering programs for stray cats as part of its effort to reduce the number of homeless animals.

Gagliano said the goal is not only to nurse kittens back to health, but also to ensure they do not later reproduce and contribute to another cycle of unwanted litters.

Anyone who finds a stray kitten or cat should contact Seminole County Animal Services or bring the animal to the shelter. Officials can arrange spay or neuter care and help prepare the animal for adoption.
