SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — In a move aimed at enhancing school safety, Illinois lawmakers are evaluating a proposal to establish uniform standards for emergency panic alert systems across the state’s schools.

Senate Bill 2948, introduced by State Senator Michael E. Hastings, a Democrat from Frankfort, seeks to empower the Illinois State Board of Education with the responsibility of creating these guidelines. The proposed systems, referred to as “Alyssa’s Alert,” are designed to enable school staff to promptly alert law enforcement and emergency responders by simply pressing a button during critical situations.
