Senator Slotkin says she's under federal investigation over illegal orders video

Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, representing the Democratic Party, has revealed she is currently under federal investigation. This development stems from her participation in a controversial video released last year. In the video, Slotkin, alongside other Democrats with backgrounds in military and intelligence, called on troops to resist unlawful orders.

In an interview with The New York Times, Slotkin commented on the gravity of the situation, saying, “Facts matter little, but the threat matters quite a bit. The threat of legal action; the threat to your family; the threat to your staff; the threat to you.” Her words highlight the intense pressure and potential consequences she and her colleagues might face.

The Hill has made efforts to reach out to both Slotkin and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia to gain further insight or comments regarding the investigation.

Slotkin, a seasoned veteran, completed three tours in Iraq and also served with the CIA, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation due to her extensive service background.

The controversial video, which was released in November, has faced severe criticism from the Trump administration, labeling it as seditious. The video featured not only Slotkin but also Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Democratic Representatives Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Houlahan from Pennsylvania, Maggie Goodlander from New Hampshire, and Jason Crow from Colorado.

“This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens like us,” the lawmakers said in the video. “You all swore an oath to protect and defend this constitution.”

“Right now, the threats to our Constitution aren’t just coming from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear,” the group added. “You can refuse illegal orders…you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our constitution.”

The message followed lawmakers’ questions about strikes on boats in the Caribbean allegedly carrying narcotics.

President Trump accused the group of committing “seditious behavior” punishable by death in a Truth Social post that sparked concerns from Democrats in Congress.

Crow said he received death threats following the post, as did Slotkin, who said Capitol Police put her under 24/7 security. The president’s comments were also criticized by Republicans.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused the group of launching a “politically-motivated influence operation” to inject doubt into the armed forces.

The Pentagon followed up by opening an investigation into Kelly, with Hegseth threatening to demote the Arizona Democrat and reduce his retirement pay. The senator responded with a lawsuit after the administration moved to censure him and lower his retirement rank.

“The First Amendment forbids the government and its officials from punishing disfavored expression or retaliating against protected speech,” Kelly’s complaint reads. “That prohibition applies with particular force to legislators speaking on matters of public policy.”
