WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – After previously being denied a visit, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia Thursday night.  That’s the man mistakenly deported from Maryland and sent to a prison in El Salvador.

It’s unclear how this visit was arranged, but Senator Van Hollen says he’ll share more when he returns from El Salvador.

“Our goal was very simple today, which was to check on the health and wellbeing of Kilmar,” said Van Hollen. He posted on X, “I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight, I had that chance.”

Van Hollen also commented on his meeting with El Salvador’s vice president Wednesday.

“I asked him not to be complicit in the Trump administration’s lawbreaking,” said Van Hollen.

El Salvador’s president, posting his own pictures of the meeting, said about Abrego Garcia quote, “Now that he’s been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody.”

The Supreme Court ruled the U.S. must “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return after the government said his deportation was an “administrative error.”

“I don’t see how judges can take that authority away from a president,” said Trump.

President Trump was asked if he thinks Abrego Garcia deserves due process.

“I have to refer, again, to the lawyers. I’ll have to do what they ask me to do,” said Trump.

The White House alleges Abrego Garcia is a gang member, which he and his lawyers deny.

More Democrats in Congress, including New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, are expected to travel to El Salvador.
