(NEXSTAR) – As one strain of the influenza virus begins to wane, another is gaining momentum to fill the void.
Late last year, during the holiday season, flu activity surged with influenza A, particularly the H3N2 subclade K variant, at the forefront. This variant, due to its widespread impact, earned the nickname “super flu.”
While influenza A continues to be the predominant flu type, influenza B has been on the rise for the past two weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the last week of January, influenza B accounted for roughly 23% of cases analyzed in labs across the country.
Current data indicates that while flu activity “remains elevated nationally,” most areas are either stable or showing improvement. However, the Pacific Northwest remains an outlier, with flu cases still on the rise, as per CDC monitoring.
