A tragic incident unfolded near Carbondale, Kansas, leading to the death of one individual and injuries to four law enforcement officers on Saturday. The event, which quickly escalated into a shooting, brought together multiple law enforcement agencies in a concerted response.

Authorities from the Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and other agencies converged on the scene at South Topeka Avenue and West 113th Street on the morning of November 15. The situation was described as an officer-involved shooting by Shawnee County Sheriff Brian Hill, who spoke to KSNT about the incident.

According to KBI Director Tony Mattivi, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol were initially called to the location to handle a reported domestic disturbance at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tragically, within just ten minutes of their arrival, the situation turned deadly when gunfire broke out. One man was fatally shot, and another was injured and required hospital treatment.

During a press conference, KHP Superintendent Erik Smith detailed the rapid development of the confrontation, stating, “After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted as the director stated. The suspect died from injuries he received from gunshot wounds.”

The KHP trooper was initially taken to a Topeka hospital but has now been transferred to a Kansas City medical facility. The deputies and trooper have non-life-threatening injuries, according to the KHP.

The KBI is leading the investigation into this incident.

The TPD posted on social media that it sent officers to assist other law enforcement personnel at the scene. The TPD reported that none of its officers were injured in connection to the situation.
