SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) – Tessa Bowers, a standout distance runner from Shelbyville, is aiming to cap off her impressive high school running career with memorable performances.
During the Rams’ hosting of the 1A girls’ track and field sectional on Wednesday, Bowers clinched victory in the 800 meters and played a crucial role in securing wins for her team in both the 4×800 and 4×400 relays. She also qualified for the state meet with a second-place finish in the 1600 meters.
The Shelbyville Rams are determined to defend their state championship title in the 4×800 relay at the upcoming state competition.
As a senior, Bowers has not surpassed her personal best in the 1600 meters since her sophomore year. Despite making progress, she often competes in the mile after participating in other events, prioritizing her team’s success over individual accolades.
“The team means so much to me, so not participating in relays was never really an option,” Bowers explained. “I’d always prioritize the team over my individual events. Sharing a victory with them is far more rewarding than winning alone.”
“One of our slogans is better together, and as a team she has always represented someone who is willing to put others above herself,” Shelbyville head girls’ track coach Jason Palmer said.
The Rams won their sectional on Wednesday with 122 points.
