VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 15-year-old boy is accused of stealing a gun and using it to pistol whip another teen at a park in Volusia County earlier this week, according to the sheriff’s office.
Nyziah Quiles faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle, armed burglary and grand theft of a firearm, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said on social media.
The victim — described by the sheriff’s office as another teen boy — was at Dewey Boster Park with his girlfriend around 8 p.m. Wednesday when Quiles arrived as part of a group of teens that approached the victim looking to fight him due to an incident that happened at school, the post states.
Quiles allegedly pulled out a gun and struck the victim on the side of his head before fighting him, according to the post.
Quiles was arrested on Thursday at his home in Deltona after deputies used surveillance video to identify him, stating their determination was also based on “previous encounters with him,” the sheriff’s office said.
The weapon that Quiles allegedly used in the attack — a 9mm handgun — was recovered by detectives who reportedly found it hidden inside a crossbody bag that was stashed in a garage where one of Quiles’ friends lives, the post states.
The sheriff’s office goes on to describe how detectives then identified Quiles as a suspect in a series of car break-ins that occurred on May 3, during which two firearms and a vehicle were stolen, according to the post. The weapon that Quiles is accused of using to pistol whip the other teen was reported stolen during those break-ins, investigators said.
Detectives are still investigating.
News 6 is naming and showing Quiles due to the circumstances of the case.
