AUGUSTA, Ga. () – While shopping at the Walmart on Wrightsboro Road on May 16th, Sheriff Eugene “Gino Rock” Brantley took quick action when alerted to a shoplifting incident in progress.
At approximately 5:03 p.m., the store’s Loss Prevention Manager approached Sheriff Brantley and told him that a man left the store without paying for merchandise. She informed the Sheriff that the suspect had fled on foot toward North Leg Road near the Wife Saver restaurant.

Without hesitation, Sheriff Brantley pursued the individual on foot, apprehending him on a side street near the east side of the store. Responding deputies, including Deputy Butcher and Lieutenant Fanning, took custody of the suspect, identified as John Henebery, shortly after. Warrants were obtained and Henebery was transported to the Richmond County Jail.
Sheriff Brantley stated, “It’s all in a day’s work. The men and women working the streets deal with this type of crime every day. So when I have the opportunity to be involved and prevent crime or apprehend someone breaking the law, that’s what I do. We must bring safety and security back to the streets of Augusta, Georgia — one day at a time.”
