Oglethorpe Mall Shooting: 6 months later, safety updates

In Savannah, Georgia, six months have passed since the tragic shooting at Oglethorpe Mall, a heartbreaking event that took the life of a woman and deeply affected the local community. Following the incident, city officials and law enforcement agencies implemented various security measures to enhance shopper safety and deter future violence.

Now, half a year later, there is curiosity about whether those safety protocols are still active. To address this, reporters reached out to officials to discuss the adjustments made since the shooting.

Today, Oglethorpe Mall is bustling with activity, but the memory of that fateful day lingers among shoppers, businesses, and law enforcement personnel. Since the incident in July, security measures have been upgraded, with the primary aim of ensuring a safe environment for all who visit the mall.

Chatham County Sheriff Richard Coleman shared with reporters that he frequently visits the mall, engaging with both shoppers and store owners to confirm that they feel secure.

“In fact, I make it a point to walk through the mall approximately twice a month,” stated Sheriff Coleman. “I’ve had conversations with numerous individuals who frequent the mall, and they express a sense of comfort. There have been no complaints, and life has continued as usual since the incident.”

Law enforcement presence has increased, and security teams have enhanced monitoring and preparedness strategies, though specific details are not public.

Savannah’s Mayor, Van Johnson, adds that citywide efforts continue, including reductions in stolen guns, targeted policing, and high clearance rates on violent crimes.

“We’ve reduced the number of guns that were stolen from unlocked cars. So hopefully that translates to less guns on the street with translates to less guns being used in violent situations,” said Mayor Johnson.

Business owners report that foot traffic is slowly returning, though some shoppers remain cautious.

“It heightens your awareness and preparation. You know, that’s what it’s done for law enforcement to make sure that we’re always prepared. These things that we practice, these things that we train on. It teaches us to be prepared every single day in the community,” said Sheriff Coleman.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, though no new developments have been released, authorities say. All six defendants are in custody and have pleaded not guilty to charges
Including felony murder and unlawful gang activity. Court proceedings are expected to continue in February.

Officials are encouraging the public to remain aware of their surroundings, such as the nearest exit, and to report anything suspicious. Months after the incident, officials want to reassure the public.

“Nothing is changing. I went through (the mall) last week. Customers were smiling and the mall was actually packed, actually, it was crowded. We are standing together against crime…. we will not be defeated by these type of incidents,” said Sheriff Coleman.

The Chatham County Sheriff said to that community cooperation remains a critical part of keeping public spaces safe.
