Snow could cause problems on roofs with tarps from Helene

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Hurricane Helene left many homes with tarps over people’s roofs.  And while those homeowners wait to get their roofs fixed, the snow this week could have created more problems.

After the snow, the CSRA got on Tuesday, people with tarps on their roofs after Helene may have experienced some difficulties.

“Snows a lot heavier on a tarp. So, what you’ll have is the tarp giving in the middle over a period of time, and to be honest with you these tarps have been on houses for a long time. So, that’s where we try to come In,” said Scott Gunter, the General Manager of RCS Roofing.

Scott Gunter with RCS Roofing says he heard of tarps falling through or blowing off during the snow. And while they have to wait for conditions to be safe before getting onto your roof, they can re-tarp it.

“The best thing to do is to make sure the tarps are in good shape. If they don’t, they can get it re-tarped. Insurance companies will pay for a tarp because you got to mitigate for your own. But make sure your house is dry that’s the main thing,” said Gunter.

The snow melting can cause water on the roof, leading to leaking, especially if your tarp has been on the roof for a while.

“Well, the damage for the leaking is because when you put a tarp on, you put it on with nails, so there are nail holes there. So yes, it is kind of a vital thing to get on a movement to get things done,” said Gunter.

Gunter has heard another issue is it being cold in the house because of the hole. He suggests making sure your tarp is in good condition, and if you can call a local roofer who can help you get started on fixing your roof.

“We do have availability if you got your insurance, and a lot of times, the insurance won’t pay for a full roof. Instead of repair, we can finance it, and we offer several options,” said Gunter.
