In a compassionate gesture to aid federal employees affected by the ongoing paycheck delays, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) in Greer, South Carolina, is spearheading a food drive. The initiative aims to gather non-perishable food items and essential household goods to support those in need.

As the calendar ticks over to Wednesday, it marks the third week since the government shutdown commenced, leaving many GSP workers without their full salaries during this period of uncertainty.

“This effort is a bridge for the employees until the shutdown resolves, allowing them to receive compensation for their time worked,” explained Tiffany Cherry, GSP’s spokesperson. She emphasized, “This is a meaningful way for the airport and the wider Upstate community to stand in solidarity with these workers during such challenging times.”

Some travelers expressed their empathy and concern regarding the situation, as reported by 7NEWS. They believe federal employees deserve fair treatment and timely pay.

“If the workers aren’t getting paid, then no one should until the situation is resolved. It’s simply unjust,” commented Jamie Ralston, reflecting a sentiment shared by many.

“They’re not for the people when they’re not giving them their paycheck and telling them they have to come into work,” said Eva Navarra. “Because how long can that go on before they’ll have to go find another job, you know, they have families and children and responsibilities.”

Federal employees at GSP have continued to work during the shutdown.

“They’ve continued throughout the government shutdown to show up for our customers and our passengers to keep everything operational and so far, our operations have remained smooth and efficient,” explained Cherry.

The airport said they’ll keep collecting donations until the shutdown is over.

Donations can be dropped off at the terminal’s information center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and at the valet parking kiosk between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

GSP leaders said collected items will be distributed through a pop-up pantry organized by Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District.

The pantry will be open to all federal employees serving GSP, including those from the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and National Weather Service, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
