South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigating 2 South Carolina State shootings, 1 arrest made

RICHLAND, S.C. () – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged one individual in connection with one of the shootings that took place at South Carolina State on Saturday night.

Both shootings occurred in the evening of Saturday, October 4, 2025. The first shooting resulted in the death of one woman. Additional information and her identity have not yet been released by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.

The second shooting left one man injured. He is currently in the hospital.

According to SLED, the shootings are not believed to be connected; however, investigations are
active and ongoing. Anyone with information on either incident should call (866) 472-8477 or send an email.

SLED has charged Matthew Daniel McCoy, 18, with:

  • Pointing and Presenting a Firearm at a Person
  • Carrying a Weapon on School Property

McCoy was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

SLED was requested for the investigation by the South Carolina State University Department of Public Safety.
